In 1584, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinando I de' Medici, embarked on a visionary undertaking: the foundation in Rome of the Typographia Medicea (the Medicean Oriental Press), directed by the celebrated linguist Giovan Battista Raimondi. The objective was not merely academic, but profoundly cultural and strategic: to print scientific, philosophical, and religious books in Oriental languages, disseminating masterpieces like the medical texts of Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and the geographical works of al-Idrisi throughout Europe.
A few years later, with the laws known as Leggi Livornine (Livornine Laws) (1591-1593), Ferdinando I transformed the port of Livorno into a free port, welcoming Ottoman, Armenian, and Greek merchants. Florence thus became the European nerve center where the knowledge, culture, and raw materials of the Middle East merged with the mastery and elegance of the Tuscan Renaissance.
